Results / Gul RS Grand Slam Paignton SC - 18/05/2002

The second leg of the GUL RS Grand Slam series rolled into Torbay on May 18/19 for a real action- packed weekend. With the RS300, 400, 700, 800 and K6s being run on three courses by the Royal Torbay YC and the RS200 and 600s on a separate course run by Paignton SC there was incident packed racing wherever you looked in Torbay. On Saturday the mean wind was 18-20 knots but with regular big lumps hitting the race courses there were some white knuckle runs for many. Sunday saw almost perfect conditions with a much steadier 12-14 knots allowing almost every boat to enjoy good racing. If this was not enough the RS Racing Ball was held in the Riveria Centre at Torquay on Saturday night with 270 people making it the best ever attended RS Ball. A highlight of the evening was the competition for a Caribbean holiday for 2 racing on board one of their Farr 65s, donated by Formula One Events. Both host clubs responded extremely well to the challenge of running such a huge event with 150 boats spread over the four courses. On the late Sunday afternoon the M5 was full of various RS sailors heading home, totally shattered but very happy. VINCENT/DANBURY DOMINATE THE GUL RS200 GRAND SLAM AT PAIGNTON S.C. What a weekend for RS200s; 42 boats and sailing on Saturday that will be talked about for a long time. With lumps of wind hitting 25 knots descending on the fleet for five minutes at a time the runs became capsize graveyards but the smallest boat in the RS family is a rugged boat, this combined with the determination of the sailors saw a high number of boats record at least two finishs. Race 1 was led throughout by Martin English/Bridget Cooke from Wembley who pulled out a good lead whilst behind them there were regular capsizing before Jon Lewis/Paula Hall claimed second ahead of Steve Dunn/Dottie Cormack. Race 2 was a race you did not want to lead, Mark and Sam Littlejohns lead finished with a very wet gybe. Dave and Nicky Derby looked to have the race under control but did not notice a shorten course flag on the Committee boat and started another beat. The Bristol pair of Ian Pickard/Laurie Dunn and Pete Vincent/Trudie Danbury did not make the same mistake and kept their kites to blast to the finish to claim first and second with Hamish Calder/Severine Rees Jones in third. Race 3 saw the Vincent/Danbury team hold a big lead at the first mark but this disappeared on the first run. A good close tussle developed before the Littlejohns stayed upright at last to claim a deserved win with Lewis/Hall second and Vincent/Danbury third. Lewis/Hall just led from the Littlejohns overnight but all the leading contenders had two results and one they would rather not talk about so the event was wide open going into the second day. Sunday saw the wind move to the south and ease to a moderate breeze, much to the relief of the vast majority. The wind slowly clocked round more to the west all day and the race team from Paignton SC deserve the highest praise for their race management skills. Ken Falcon, PRO, Simon Gater, main mark layer, and their teams constantly adjusted the course to keep it true with the smallest possible gaps between races. The start lines were also a good length and very true so a very competitive fleet produced no general recalls and only one boat OCS the whole weekend. Race 4 saw the Derbys lead at mark 1 but Vincent/Danbury were through on the first run and then controlled the race to record a comfortable victory ahead of Lewis/Hall, who just got the better of Calder/Rees Jones. The fleet soon realised that the Vincent/Danbury team were on a real mission when they squeezed the Littlejohns out at the first mark to lead. Paul Fisk/Claire Upton-Brown got into the lead at the first leeward mark but once Vincent/Danbury regained the lead on the second beat there was only going to be one winner. The Littlejohns passed Fisk/Upton-Brown right on the finishing buoy to claim second. The fleet must have thought they were having a nightmare when in the final race Vincent/Danbury led again at the first mark with the Littlejohns in close company. When Calder/Rees Jones had gear problems on a kite drop Vincent and Littlejohn were left miles clear to have a virtual match race. Littlejohn got the better of the third beat and carefully covered to claim race victory with Vincent second with Lewis/Hall just getting the better of Pickard/Dunn to claim third. This was more than enough to give Vincent/Danbury overall victory who recovered from an 18th in race 1 when Vincent managed to provide rich entertainment to the fleet by falling out the boat whilst trying port tack the fleet off the start. Bristol Corinthian boats are obviously in hot form totally controlling the RS200 GUL Grand Slam circuit after two events. Vincent/Danbury have scored 2.1 in the only two events sailed in their new boat whilst Pickard/Dunn have scored 1.5
