The GUL RS200 Grand Slam event at Lee on Solent SC proved to be another
real top event for RS200s in a year where the standard of racing is
really reaching new heights. After a weekend of six action packed races
in varied conditions for another bumper entry of 47 boats the leading
boats came off the water with no one knowing who had won. Such was the
nature of the event it transpired that 8 boats went into the last race
with a chance to win. Such is the overall depth of 200 racing now with so
many boats capable of being in the top it was only Paul and Suzie Hammet
that recorded six top 10 results.
Steve Dunn and Claire Upton-Brown made a great recovery from 26th in the
first race to be very consistent and secure victory with a final race
win. By his own standards Dunn has been having a poor year but bounced
back to form at the Fat Face event at Derwent earlier in June and was
sailing here with his old confidence and swagger.
Saturday saw a lively force 4-5 from the south west, which produced a
classic LOSSC short chop, which caught many crews out. Race1 was led in
style at the first mark by Ian Pickard/Laurie Dunn who then, much to the
amusement of the fleet, tried to put the kite up on the tight reach to
the outer loop, and promptly disappeared off at 90 degrees to the course.
The Littlejohns then led followed by Pete Vincent/Trudie Danbury and
Dunn/Upton-Brown. When Vincent and Dunn had very wet moments on the run
the Littlejohns were left well clear with Pickard recovering to second
and the Hewitsons third. Pickard/Dunn made no mistakes in the second
race to win from Steve/Katie Restall and Jon Lewis/Paula Hall.
Vincent/Danbury had a good lead at mark 1 in race 3 but Dunn/Upton Brown
made the right call on the close reach, put the kite up and were on
Vincents transom at mark 2. After a close tussle Dunn pulled clear with
Vincent second and the Derbys third well clear of the fleet.
With the Littlejohns, Hewitsons, Pickard and Paul Fisk all getting OCS in
race 3 the event was so wide open overall overnight it was silly. The
evening was spent overcoming the shock that the Brothers Grimm did know
how to sail after all and finished 2nd in a race in the 400s at Stokes
Bay.
Sunday was a nice warm day with only a gentle south west breeze causing a
short postponement. Race 4 got underway with crews only just sitting on
the side and it was like they had never been away. Having not sailed
since last years Nationals whilst Jo had their second baby, Tom and Jo
Hewitson controlled the race to win from Paul and Suzie Hammet. By now
the whole fleet had worked out the beat required a hard left hand corner
but it was the Littlejohns that got the best start and led from mark 1 to
the finish with the Derbys second and Harry/Prue Roome third.
Crews soon gave up trying to count up scores before the last race as it
just made your head hurt. Dunn/Upton-Brown tacked short of the port lay
line on the opening beat and had the best track into the windward mark
just leading the flying Bowmoor youth crew of Andrew Robertson/Emily
Haworth. Dunn went onto score a convincing win from the Hammets and the
Derbys.
Lee on Solent SC had run a very good event with very smart turn arounds
on Sunday so the whole fleet was off the water by 15.00. Dunn now looks
on hot form and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain that
form into what is looking a very open National Championships. The next
big event is at Hayling Island in a fortnight, which attracted an entry
of 60 boats last year; should be a monster event.
