LEE ON SOLENT May 12th / 13th Over one hundred and eighty boats, intense racing, blazing sunshine and a big party. The longest winter blues in memory were finally and dramatically dispelled on the Gul RS Racing Circuit, on May 12th / 13th. Forty seven RS200s, including most of the top teams, ensured some hot competition. In light conditions newcomer to the fleet, Mark Littlejohn (ex top Laser sailor and Shirley Robertsons coach) gave notice that he will be a force in the class. Sailing with his son Stuart, they chose the right route on the opening beat and showed everyone the way for the first lap. Bad boy of the fleet, Jon Lewis sailing with Lizzie Humphrey reeled them in eventually to claim a narrow victory, with Angus Hemmings and Clair Nuttall in third spot. Race two saw more newcomers to the class, Paul and Suzie Hammett find winning form with Emma Harris and Trudie Danbury (who sailed in the first ever 200 event) earning second. Paul and Caroline Fisk began their consistent run of three thirds. Tom and Jo Hewitson found the go pedal in the last race of the day, overtaking early leaders Martin Wadhams and Amanda Davies on the second beat. After a tense final windward mark rounding when the wind eased and tide increased, threatened turmoil was narrowly avoided by the leading two, with the Fisks gaining third again. Sunday produced similar light wind racing and after a short delay while the wind settled and the sailors implemented their favourite remedies for the previous nights indulgences, the game recommenced. Harry and Pru Roome lead from start to finish, fighting off challenges from the Hewitsons and Lewis/Humphrey. The fifth race was sailed in the strongest breeze and the Hewitsons made no mistake. The Fisks put in another good result with a second to keep the event wide open. With several boats still in contention going into the final heat, the wind kept a trick in store to add more spice to the occasion. The Littlejohns were once again early leaders, but were chased hard by a pack containing all the overall challengers. Lewis/Humphrey lead narrowly into the last beat, but the wind began to die and swing as a sea breeze set in over the gradient wind. The situation was clear, but where to position your boat to get the first of the new wind and stay between the opposition and the line was less obvious. The Hewitons came out on top and with it clinched the event. Wadhams/Davies pulled up from fourth to second but this was not enough to prevent the Fisks from claiming a well deserved second overall. Next stop is stunning Lake Como for many teams, followed by Torbay in the middle of June on the Gul RS Circuit. 1st 655 Tom & Jo Hewitson 2nd 626 Paul & Caroline Fisk 3rd 622 Martin Wadhams & Amanda Davies 4th Jon Lewis & Lizzie Humphrey 5th Angus Hemmings & Clare Nuttall 6th Paul & Suzie Hammett
