RS200 GUL Tour at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club April 9/10
The second GUL Grand Prix event of the year saw BCYC lay on a treat for 38 boats; this also doubled as the first round of the West Country Boat Repairs SW Ugly Tour. They were treated to warm sunshine, it was hard to believe this was April, a force 4 breeze (on Saturday at least!), perhaps the world’s most efficient race officer and, as always, copious amounts of rum. After a few years of absence, it was good to back.
With most of the “yoof” and 470 contingent who have recently began to populate the class away being glamorous in Palma, it turned out to be an event where the old guard made a resurgence. And with Dave Giles, Lee Sydenham and Rich Edwards all returning, it certainly did feel like 2004 all over again.
4 races were held on the Saturday, as the forecast for Sunday was very light airs. The black flag came out from the beginning which meant, amusingly for the whole fleet, Ian Sharps/Ellie Martin didn’t start a race until about 3.30pm. With the left generally being favoured throughout the day but the odd huge right hander coming in, it was a case of snakes and ladders at times. New pairing Dave Giles/Jane Hivey had no problems though, recording 1,2,1 before a black flag in the final race.
Behind, Pete Vincent/Eluned Stewart showed great consistency to record 3 top 4 results and the Edwards put in a solid 5,1,5 before also succumbing to the black flag. The rest of the fleet saw plenty of inconsistency though.
With no racing on Sunday (the forecast was correct), the scores from Saturday proved decisive. Giles/Hivey came out on top from the Edwards, with Vincent/Stewart a very close third. Top silver fleet boat was Matt Greenfield/David Rolfe from Chew’s Nick/Sue Martindale whilst Wembley SC’s Julian Bradley/Chloe Sideris took out the bronze fleet from Chew’s Dave Sweet/Derian Scott.
A top weekend all in all and hopefully a sign of what’s to come this season. Next Gul Grand Prix event is at Yorkshire Dales 14/15 May, next SW Ugly Tour is at Beer on May 7/8 see you there!
