Round 2 of The RS200 South West Ugly Tour at Beer SC – very warm welcome in the nearly finished new club house.

It was a new venue for RS200’s for the second round of the West Country Boat Repairs sponsored South West Ugly Tour when they visited Beer SC on May 7/8. Beer SC has a strong reputation for being super friendly and the RS200 fleet discovered this reputation was totally justified in spades particularly as members had a new shiny club house to show off.  Much last minute work had gone into getting the club house finished in time for the start of the season and what great views it offers of Lyme Bay.

19 visiting RS200’s arrived on quite an unusual  grey day for this spring. Considering the strong easterlies that had been blowing all week getting off the beach proved no hassle. In the race area there was a more lumpy sea then the 10-14 knots justified which made punching upwind really hard work all day. As everyone soon discovered the wind was not totally stable in direction flicking between east and south all afternoon.

In Race 1 it was a battle to win the pin end and tack early . Charlotte Savage/MJ Gifford won the port lay line fight to lead throughout although hard pressed by Ian Sharps/Ellie Martin.  John Teague/Louise “Laurie” Fisher steadily pulled through to third.  Caroline/Nick Martin worked the right well to lead race 2 and gybed straight away on the run to go back to favoured side but lost out badly. Teague/Laurie took the lead and went onto win from Savage/ the preview King second with the Martins third.

The old warrior Ian Sharps/Ellie Martin showed left paid by never knowingly going anywhere near the middle of the beat  to win race 3 from Dave Steed/ Katherine Lovering with the steady Martins third. Teague/Laurie blitzed race 4 to lead throughout. Behind there was a close tussle which the consistent Martins  won to claim second from Savage/ Oasis of waterborne delight.

After quite a hard day on the water the fleet along with the 800’s needed feeding and the odd ale. Beer SC of course knew how to cope with this and there was soon a very contented buzz in a full new club house, ok there were a few wires hanging out the wall but who cared!

After a very wet evening Sunday morning was glorious with almost total clear blue skies and quite a breeze. With move in wind direction with a little west in it getting off the beach was not an issue but it was very clear from a quick glance out to sea that it was a little feisty in the race area. The nervous fleet watching more white appear were in general agreement when the race officer abandoned for the day with 25 knots in the bay and forecast for it to build showing how wise the race team was to fit an extra race in on Saturday. This left John and Laurie overall winners by a point. Tony and young Zach Freer won the silver division with Chew club mates David/Jeannie Oakey first bronze boat.

Next West Country Boat Repairs SWUT event is at another new venue Penarth YC on July 10th whilst the GUL National Grand Prix moves to Yorkshire Dales this weekend and another fine new club house.
