RS200 SW Ugly Tour round 3 at Penarth YC Oldies are the best

Penarth YC new RS200 fleet promoted their first RS200 open meeting as the Oldies open with a poster making fun of RS promotion photos featuring RS200s being sailed by youngsters and particularly young ladies in bikinis. Little did they know how true their title would be, the top three boats overall featured 3 people over 50, Jeannie Oakey of course does not look a day over 40 and a late 40 something (Pete Cruickshank) who of course does not look a day under 60!

20 RS200s made the trip to South Wales for a new venue for RS200s and round 3 of the West Country Boat Repairs Ugly Tour. Visitors came from far and wide including Jersey, Budworth and Parkstone.  Some had decided not to travel because of the poor light wind forecast, how foolish that decision was! With a light south westerly set early on a thermal built over the top when the sun came out at midday. The majority of the racing was held in glorious sunshine and a decent 8-13 knots although it did have odd moments of complete madness when it shut off for 5-10 mins.

PRO Keith Whitfield took the great decision to get away from the cliffs and go well beyond the shipping channel. Some of locals were concerned this could mean they were going into unchartered waters where sea dragons might hide, at the very least it was English waters and would they need their passports.

Race 1 and Matt Greenfield/Lara White port tacked the fleet to lead but had a major problem when trying to carry kite to spreader mark against the tide. John Teague/Pete Cruickshank then led throughout closely followed by Pete Vincent/Naomi Bubbles Pound. Penarths finest Tom Atkin/Minie Lucey had an inspired final beat to jump into second behind Teague/Over 40 with Jeff Dyer/Sian Reynolds close in 4th. Race 2 and the wind had one of its odd moments, anyone in middle or right of first beat watched their burgee go round in circles whilst anyone to the left were hiking hard. Tash Lister/ Briony Meakins took full advantage to hold a good lead that they held to the finish although chased hard at end by Matt Bromley/Andrea Adrian Morgan. Teague/under 60 fought back to third with David Oakey/Jeannie Oakey 4th.

Race 3 and the wind had settled down more. Vincent/Bubbles took an early lead but pressed hard throughout by Teague/oldie but on the final beat the wind went hard right, Vincent/Bubbles pulled clear and the Oakeys always in the leading group pulled through to second with Teague third and Dyer/Reynolds 4th. Going into the final race there were 3 possible overall winners and the wind had settled in the new WNW direction. Vincent/Bubbles went straight into the lead but had Teague/too much competition right up their transom; Greenfield/White joined in and the final 2 runs were very close but Vincent/Bubbles never lost the lead and won the race to win overall. Greenfield/White were second and Teagues/Ooooh Nooooos third gave them second overall. Bromley/Morgan was top silver boat in 4th overall and Lister/Meakins top bronze boat.

After a great open meeting John Teague plus crews is in the lead on the SW Ugly Tour 2 points ahead of Pete Vincent and many crews. Battle will be resumed at Exe SC on Sept 24th.
