Stokes Bay sailing club hosted a feisty final RS200 Gul Grand Prix event of the year.  After the tiniest of hesitation, 27 boats launched into the maelstrom of Stokes Bay at its best; 25 knots with the ‘odd choppy bit’.

Race 1 was a battle of the 200 sailor vs the elements. The breeze built up to 30 knots in the gusts, so downwind turned out to be a lot of fun, especially for those who decided to go to the wrong leeward marks!  The battle was won by Jonny McGovern and Sarah Williams whose navigational skills and boat speed saw them pip David Giles and Jane Hivey to the finish.

The breeze was now at a steady 28 knots with the odd gust and the Stokes Bay safety facilities were being stretched to the limit by the needs of our RS800 and 100 brethren.  The racing was abandoned and the fleet retired to carry out a spot of windsurfing and crazy golf.  The evening’s entertainment of Sumo wrestling and a Mount Gay rum sponsored night of drinking left a number of the fleet somewhat bleary eyed in the morning, and also a bit confused about how Chris ‘the Hulk’ Martin was capable of downing anyone in a sumo suit…..

Sunday morning dawned just as breezy as Saturday afternoon had been. However,  by the time we all launched it had settled to a fun 12-15 knots.  For the first two races of the day smashing the right hand corner of the beat appeared to be the ticket to success.   David Jessop and Clare Hansell took the first race and Ben McGrane and Roz Allen took the second.  Race three added a bit of variety, ‘eagle eyed’ McGrane took advantage of a big left shift on the first beat to pick up another bullet.

Overall Mcgrane and Allen took their first RS200 victory – owed almost entirely to Roz’s epic hiking.  The consistent team of David Giles and Jane Hivey were second and John Teague crewed by Pete Cruickshank third.  Many thanks to Stokes Bay sailing club for a very well run event held in tough conditions and the provision of very impressive evening’s entertainment.
