JP Watersports RS200 Scottish Circuit at East Lothian YC – 5/6 June

East Lothian YC the host of this year 200 Nationals welcomed 17 boats for the 3rd round of the Scottish RS200 circuit.

Saturdays racing as is customary with the 200 fleet was close and tactical. With  E/SE 5 – 10 knots and tide changing between R1 & R2 the sailors enjoyed great conditions.

R1 was won by Robbie and Vicki from Sailingtogs team (Hivey’s) and the Millers in 3rd. Martin ‘street fighter’ Boatman missed the start by a considerable amount but managed to ‘punch’ his way through the fleet to claim 4th.

R2 With a small shift prior to the start the port end became favoured. Burns/Simpson noticed this change and was the only boat near the pin end, they went on to win from Hivey. Millers again sailed well to take 3 rd. Katie Masterton and Shona Redpath sailed well to take 4th, whilst Boatman ‘ I just can’t start’ Murphy again sailed well through the fleet.

R3 and again Burns Simpson showed good speed and pulled away from the fleet with Hivey’s not far behind. The Miller’s again showed good speed and took 3rd.

R4 and Boatman and Hivey tussled for the lead throughout the race, eventually Boatman forced Hivey to do turns just prior to the finish to take a well deserved win from Hivey. Although the author thinks the only reason Hivey did turns was that he was scared of getting the ‘Glasgow kiss’ on return to the shore ! Burns Simpson got the ‘I can’t start’ disease form Boatman. Millers again finished 3rd narrowly beaten by the spinning Hivey on the finish.

The host club put on an excellent meal for competitors on Saturday night and sailors then enjoyed a number of drinks in the local bars and at the club. Some sailors opted for a wet BBQ as the rain came in.

Sunday dawned a bit wet and miserable, in stark contrast to the previous days clear blue skies. However a small swell and light breeze made the racing challenging for all.

R5 The miller’s lead of the port end of the start line and found some extra pressure to take a healthy lead. Burns/Simpson rounded 2nd and the Hivey’s not far behind. Downwind Millers and Burns gybed half way down the run to find some extra pressure and pulled away from the chasing pack. Millers took a deserved win from Burns/Simpson. Hivey eventually broke his 2nd place duct, but in the wrong direction to take 3rd.

Thanks must be paid to ELYC for putting on a great event, JP Watersports for providing prizes. The next round of the Scottish 200 circuit is at Helensburgh SC on the 19/20 June, where another bumper turnout is expected.
