RS200 Nationals Day One
The day started with
The gate start went off with only a few minor incidents (no duckems for boats hitting the guard launch!). At the windward mark Robbie Burns/Victoria Simpson lead from David/Jane Hivey (Sailingtogs) with Steve Dunn/Sheena Craig in third. The pack closed up down the first run and for the next three laps the top eight places changed almost constantly in the gusty, shifty conditions. Robbie/Vic led to the leeward gate but struggled with the kite and gifted the win to Sailingtogs with Steve/Sheena coming in third. A brilliant race to start the Championships.
Between races the breeze died to 12-13knots for the second start. Round the first mark Sailingtogs led from Ben Saxton/Matt Rainback (Rola-Track). Both boats had come from completely opposite sides of the beat with less tide on the right and a favourable wind bend on the left. Downwind Robbie/Vic and Martin Boatman/Sam Murphy (Zhik) caught up with the top two, on a run seeing the leaders sailing completely different angles. For the second beat Tom Morris/Emma Porteous showed some awesome upwind speed to round the windward mark with Rola-Track and Zhik. Downwind some close battles were had and the leaders all closed up together again. The final beat saw Sailingtogs extend to round first whilst the next four boats jostled for position, with Tom/Emma again coming out on top. At the finish it was Sailingtogs first from Tom/Emma with Robbie/Vic rounding off the top three.
Day one over, the fancy dress party has begun and the Bronze fleet have been given an excellent seminar by some top coaches/sailors in the fleet after sailing. What a fantastic fleet where after a great days racing, the top sailors are happy to give up their time to help other sailors in the fleet and provide an awesome seminar programme throughout the week.
