Results / Eurocup YC Carnac, Brittany - 23/05/2015

This was a classic Carnac regatta, sun, westerly sea breeze, blue sky and sparkling sea. Saturday was a gentle introduction and Ian Martin & Chlöe Martin and Chris Catt and Roz McGrane winning the two races in hiking conditions but mainly soaking downwind. On Sunday the sea breeze kicked in properly and we had three championship length races with Ian and Chlöe showing us how to do it, if we were near enough to see them. The beats went on forever and with a drag race to the port layline it was a struggle to gain a few boats lengths upwind. Ian and Chris boats were dead flat all the time and with their crews hiking so you could only see their knees in the boat. Downwind was where places changed with variations in pressure providing big gains for the fast people. Chris & Roz, Mark Heather & Lucy Preston, Josh  Metcalfe & Amy Yeoman and Dave Derby and Kate Fitzsimmons battled if out for 2nd and 3rd places.

On Monday we had to wait for the sea breeze but it came in stronger when it arrived. In the first race Paul & Rosie Lewis led at the first mark from the right hand side with Sam Thompson & Leanne Hibberd scorching down the same side of the course on the first run into second place. As Ian Martin had had to leave, the first places were up for grabs, and Mark & Lucy took the first and Nick Charles & Alice Eyre, getting in the groove, won the second race. We were sent in after two races, some indignant about missing a race, other relieved and still tired after the marathon the previous day.

On Tuesday morning we managed to get one race in the northerly before the start of the sea breeze cancelled out the wind. Chris & Roz showed their mastery of the light conditions to grab first place overall by just one point from Mark & Lucy. As ever YC Carnac showed us great hospitality, great racing in a superb venue.
