SEAS round 5 at Weir Wood

The forecast until late morning on 5 July was wet with no breeze, so those that turned out were keen – and keen to race. By midday a westerly had displaced the calm and the PRO, David Binding, announced that he was targeting 4 back-to-back races to complement the newly arrived wind and sun.

David and Emily Giles (Weir Wood) and John Ramshaw and Mark Harrington (Weir Wood) used some local knowledge to take a pretty straightforward first and second in the first race. Julian Bradley and Helen Caffenta (Wembley) finished third.

In race 2, Giles chose hard left on the second beat and popped our nervously at the windward mark behind Bradley. Downhill, Giles worked through Bradley but a spinnaker error at the bottom mark cost him several places. Bradley extended his lead to take a convincing win. Spotting the pressure on the final run payed off for Ramshaw taking second, with Martin and Julie Pascoe (Weir Wood) finishing third.

On the 3rd start the short line compressed the fleet with Giles and Ramshaw just managing to squeeze inside the pin. However they were both forced too far left to capitalise on their excellent starts. Bradley with Jack Vincent and Claudia Wilson (Bough Beech) played the shifts up the middle and came in fast on starboard first and second at the windward mark with Giles third. By the leeward gate, Giles and Bradley were neck and neck with Ramshaw and Pascoe making ground behind. On the following beat Tom Goody and Chris Thomas (Broadstairs) overhauled Ramshaw and Pascoe. Bradley and Giles had a great gybing dual on the last leeward leg, each catching pressure and surging ahead. Giles was to subsequently retire after an earlier port-starboard incident.

The leaders all went left on the fourth start, but starboard paid in spades to put David Beaney and Mary Davis (Castaways) first at the windward mark with Vincent second, Goody third followed by Giles, Ramshaw and Bradley. Downwind proved shifty and gusty but Bradley stayed right and showed more mastery to work up to second by the end of the leg. By this time Bradley was fastest up and downwind and had the measure of the local conditions working himself into pole and a substantial lead. Despite their efforts no one else could get past Beaney on the next two circuits. Ramshaw, however, just got through Giles coming into the final leeward mark to take third.

Overall Bradley was the clear winner counting three firsts, Ramshaw was second with 7 points and Giles third with 9. The masters' prize went to Beaney with Goody first youth.

Another great RS200 Open at Weir Wood Sailing Club.
