RS200 National Circuit Hayling Island 2015
Hayling served up a cracker this weekend, with 15 kts, waves and brilliant sunshine. Race 1 got underway on its second attempt after one general recall and strict race officer Mark Darling going straight to the Black Flag. Ben Palmer & Amy Seebright and Jack Holden & Amy Yeoman made the most of the pin end bias to lead around the windward. Ben and Amy’s initial comfortable lead got eaten away but current national champion Ian Martin with Alan Roberts crewing. On the second run Ian & Alan nipped past Ben and Amy.
Second race saw much of the similar conditions with the breeze increasing in the late teens and more capsizing. Ian and Alan once again showed their skills in the wavy conditions with Ally Martin and Simon Potts (fresh from Salcombe week) in second and Dicken Maclean and Jo Hewitson in third.
Ally and Simon dominated the third race from the start and gave the fleet a good pair of heels. Maybe Simon was that keen for a beer they decided to hike for the third race. Best of the rest was hard fought over the three laps with Ian and Alan getting past Ben and Amy on the last downwind.
The fleet then headed home for a well-deserved beer and BBQ.
Second day was slightly lighter to begin with and many people struggled in the lighter choppy conditions, but not James Peters and Joanna Wright. Ian and Alan finished second with Josh Metcalfe and Millie Alcock third.
The breeze slowly built over the day once again Hayling Bay at its best, white horses everywhere and brilliant sunshine. With the increase the breeze stabilised and the racing became an upwind and downwind drag race. James and Jo continued their Sunday dominance with another impressive win, with Ian and Alan in second, and Jack and Amy third.
The last race James and Jo won the biased pin end to lead from the off and never looked back to complete their hat trick of day 2. However this was not enough to pip Ian and Alan of the top spot. Ben and Amy nipped past Mark Heather and Lucy Preston (recovering from stag do’s and Hayling to Paris cycle rides) for second place.
Overall it finished with Ian and Alan first, James and Jo second and Ben and Amy third.
