RS200 Scottish at Largo Bay

An RS200 sailor writes; Ten RS200s were not put off by a dire forecast for the Scottish championships to be held at the now legendary Largo Bay SC. Although many of the ‘usual suspects’ were missing some new faces attended the event showing the depth of the class in Scotland and its continual appeal for close class racing. The RS 200 is arguably the most competitive double handed fleet in both Scotland and the UK.

3 races were held on Saturday in a steady Force 2–3 from the E/NE and NE. As per usual the races were a tightly drawn out affair from the front of the fleet to the back. At the end of the days racing the leaders were Roger Tait and Georgie Hill on 5 pts, in 2nd defending champions Robbie Burns and Vicki Simpson on 6 pts  and 3rd  Sarah Robertson and Kirsty Higgins on 7 pts.

Largo SC put on a great barbecue, which was enjoyed by all the sailors with the exception of a few vegetarians – no names mentioned – Liz J !

Sunday dawned a little greyer and colder with sailors greeted by an N F3 in the first race. The breeze built steadily all day until a F5 in the last race. Robbie and Vicki won races 4 and 5. Both  ‘team Liz’ and ‘team gore’ also excelled in the windy conditions to propel themselves up the leaderboard.

Last race and with much to play for, Robbie and Vicki took up the lead  with Roger/ Georgie and the two Lizs chasing hard. But Robbie/ Vicki’s main halyard failed on round 2, leaving Roger/ Georgie the chance to take the title if they could hit the front. However they could not pass the Liz’s, who had an excellent Sunday with scores of 3,2,1. The title was thus retained by Robbie and Vicki.

Thanks again must be paid to Largo SC for hosting a great regatta; it was a shame to see so few boats compared to years gone by in both the 200’s and other classes. Next year will no doubt be different as this is one of the best sailing venues in Scotland and very underrated in the author’s humble opinion.
