Early Spring sunshine and fickle wind greeted the RS200 and RS300
competitors at Bough Beech on Saturday April 21st. Two races were held
before lunch in the best wind of the day with a fairly steady force 2-3.
After lunch the wind gave the Race Officer a nightmare; every time he moved
the windward mark the wind changed by a good 30-40 degrees. He was able to
give the fleets two more good races although the patience of the competitors
was severely tested as the wind completely disappeared for periods; the
300's in one race tacked on every leg of a triangle!!!
In race 1 for the 200's Tom and Jo Hewitson had a real get of jail card as
they found a huge lift on the left side of the course to give them a race
winning lead at the first mark. Jon Lewis and Sarah Allan were also
convincing in second with Chris and Linda Woodard pulling through to third
just ahead of Dave and Nicky Derby. In their first 200 Open Paul and Suzie
Hammett led race 2 but could not hold off the Lewis/Allan team, the Hammetts
were second with the Derbys third and Pete Vincent/Trudie Danbury fourth.
The wind went through most direction in race 3, the Hewitsons led but lost
out on the second beat in a flat calm as Jon Lewis sailed round them in new
breeze. Vincent gained 11 places in one leg to jump to second with
Paul/Caroline Fisk also picking up many places. Lewis held on down the
final run to win from the fast finishing Fisks with the Hewitsons third. The
Hammetts made no mistake in the fourth race protecting their early lead to
win from the Hewitsons and Richard Bone of the home club.
So Lewis returned to form with another emphatic win against many of the
leading 200 sailors, he is obviously going to be the man to beat this year.
Also laying the standard down for the rest of the fleet was 300 National
Champion Jerry Wales who survived some nervous opening beats to record four
race wins. The very patchy breeze did give him many anxious moments with
Barry Steel a constant threat. The home club boats of Alastair Wood and Patr
ick Wood both had their moments, both recording a second place.
