During an impromptu meeting between Northern and Scottish sailors at the 2010 Nationals, it was agreed to run four events during the season that combined the two regional circuits. The dates were chosen and the Trident UK combined circuit was born.

The inaugural year has been a huge success with 33 RS200 crews taking part. We have completed 27 races at 4 events in two countries, combining inland and sea venues. Perhaps even more impressive is that English and Scottish boats have taken part every weekend!

The series got off to a windy start up in Largs, on the West coast of Scotland, with those that braved the conditions having possibly the best sailing of the year!  Boatman and Boatman came out on top after an epic battle with Burns and Simpson with Barrett and Lones taking 3rd place.

The road show then moved onto East Lothian with an 18 boat, extremely competitive, fleet. During racing the overall lead changed hands repeatedly with Burns and Simpson finally coming out on top from Boatman and Henderson, winning on count back after a bullet the final race. 3rd place was taken by Millar and Millar.

Then it was time for the English clubs to play host and the Scottish crowd to hit the road, which they did in numbers, helping make the Derwent event the largest of the series with 20 boats. An amazing 9 races were held over the 2 days with Pickles/Westell dominating the shifty conditions to take the win from Boatman/Henderson and Fletcher/Fletcher.

Finally we moved to the stunning venue of Bassenthwaite Lake where Pickles/Westell continued to show their class winning comfortably from Saul/Fletcher and Barrett/Lones.

So with 3 of the 4 events to count Boatman/Henderson’s strong start was enough to take the title from Barrett/Lones whose consistency was enough to secure second place with third going to Smith/Smith.

A huge thanks must go to Trident UK who stepped in at the 12th hour to offer support to the events and provided discount vouchers for the overall prizes.

Looking forward, it is clear that these events worked really well with everyone participating enjoying the larger numbers and improved social. The dates for next year are being discussed as I write and I will certainly have them in my diary before any others! With a bit of co-ordination we could see four events with 20+ boats next season, putting northern sailing right back on the map!
