RS300 Carbon Boom Rule Change - Outcome of Vote

The updated class rules will be on the website, under 'Documents', shortly, or available from the Association office.

To explain the changes -

Over the last two years the UK RS300 Association have been working closely with RS Sailing to develop a Carbon Boom for the RS300. After much testing it has been agreed by both the association and RS Sailing that the boom is technically suitable and financially viable.

The main reasons for developing a carbon boom are as follows:

-       Reduce breakages – A consistent issue with the 300 boom has been breakage at the gooseneck. RS Sailing have put a great deal of work in to ensuring that the new carbon boom to ensure that it is more robust at the gooseneck – during testing the prototype stood up to these claims with the gooseneck seeming to be exceptionally strong.

-       Improve the image of the boat – The 300 now has a new sail and as a result had somewhat of a face lift. As any owner would agree the boat is striking but perhaps not so striking when your eyes turn to the aluminium boom.

With regards to performance – after over 12 months of testing we have come to the conclusion that the weight saving has very little effect on performance, we expect the new boom to slowly trickle in to the fleet, much like the new sail.

Price – RS Sailing have quoted £550 inc VAT and inc Kicker struts etc. One old style boom is in stock and the new carbon booms will be available from late January 2013.
