RS300 GUL Grand Prix & Scottish Champs

At the end of day one of the Scottish RS 300 Championships at Prestwick Neil Beveridge from the home club held a clear lead with 4 wins from 4 races. However this does not tell the whole story.

Race one got cleanly away in around 12 knots and Dave McClay showed excellent speed to lead by some margin at the first mark, with Neil Beveridge in hot pursuit. Dave held on to his diminishing lead and looked set to take the first race until the final close reach leg when the the wind strength increased significantly, and Beveridge used his significantly higher weight to power through to leeward and take the gun.

Race two was carnage when a squall of around 30 mph came through and it was only Beveridge who managed to stay upright, and won by a mile.

The wind died back for race three and despite being pushed hard by relative newcomer Mark Taylor in the early stages, Beveridge built a big lead that he would hold all the way to the line.

The final race of the day was a very close affair with Alan Henderson and Mark Taylor showing exceptional speed up the beat, but Beveridge was in hot pursuit. At the third mark all three were together, but Beveridge sailed free after the buoy knowing that the next tack onto starboard might decide the race. It did and he was able to get in front of Henderson and held on to the line.

Day 2 of the Scottish RS 300 Championships threw up some typical Prestwick weather - force 4 and some very tasty waves. Neil Beveridge from the home club showed that there is no substitute for practice in these conditions as he won all eight races in the series.

Back in the fleet Mark Taylor performed very well as a relative newcomer to the class to take second, and Alan Sinclair showed great determination in coming back from a few setbacks to take third.

The event provided excellent practice for the RS Games at Weymouth, and it is expected that at least 4 Prestwick boats will be amongst the contingent heading south in August.
