Round 2 of the RS300 GUL Grand Prix series was run in conjunction with the Billy No Mates event courtesy of Carsington SC over the weekend of 8/9 May.

To say it was a bit chilly on the Saturday is a bit of an understatement. 20+ knot gusts from the North East  made winter steamers and drysuits (or in the case of Dave Barker – wet drysuits) the order of the day. I thought May was the start of summer.

Despite the wind strength, the beautiful Derbyshire hills surrounding the reservoir made it an ‘eyes out the boat’ kind of day with plenty of large shifts and vicious gusts to catch out the unwary.

The races on Saturday followed pretty much the same pattern, Steve Bolland winning all 3 from Tim Keen. However, Keen had to fight back hard in race 3 after stopping on the start line to give us all a head start. Bolland, too, did not have it all his own way and, following a swim on the run in race 3, was overtaken for a while by both Dave Barker and Ed Curtis. Tom Ballingall was also going well in his new boat recording two 3rd place finishes. Curtis also recorded a 3rd place, going well in his first 300 event.

It was still blowing hard on Sunday morning and there was a certain reluctance to get changed into wet kit for a 10am start. It was worth it, however, as the wind soon abated to a force 3 and the sun was out. It was almost warm at times.

Bolland continued his winning was with 3 more bullets. However, Ballingall was unlucky not to have a healthy lead at the first mark in the final race, a 10 length lead evaporating near the mark as the wind went wildly left allowing Bolland through. In fact the final race was the closest of the weekend with Keen, Ballingall and Barker line abreast coming down the penultimate run and Keen only edging out Ballingall on the final mark.

So Bolland won the RS300 event from Keen, Ballingall, Barker and Curtis. As far as the Billy No Mates trophy was concerned, the 300 fleet did well taking 1st and 3rd places overall and 3 of the top 10 places, Musto Skiffs and Phantoms also going well. Pics are on www.carsingtonsc.co.uk

Many thanks to Carsington SC for a well run and enjoyable event.

Next stops on the GUL Grand Prix series are at Filey and Rutland in June.
