RS300s at the Carl Dyson Regatta, Port Edgar
The Scottish RS300 series concluded at the Carl Dyson regatta at Port
Edgar. Seven boats competed in the event which was sailed in varying wind
conditions that made course laying extremely difficult for the hard
worked race team
Only one race was sailed on Saturday in a light and failing westerly and
with a strong tide many failed to finish within the time limit. Only Ian
Baillie, then Steve MacDonald and Eddie Griffiths managed to finish from
the 300 fleet, keeping out of the tide by tacking up the edge of Rosyth
dockyard.
Sunday looked more promising with the wind slowly increasing but the
strength was variable and all 3 races suffered from large shifts that
turned the beats into fetches.
Griffiths took advantage of the fickle breeze to take the lead in race 2
and held onto it to the finish in impressive style. Baillie was second
with MacDonald third, just edging out Mark Henman.
Baillie led from the first mark in race 3 but was pushed initially by
Nick Yates sailing the 300 for the first time. MacDonald and Griffiths
then came through with Henman taking fourth again.
There was another big shift just before the 300 start together with sharp
increase in the wind to over 20 knots. This resulted in a reaching start
and a succession of screaming reaches. Baillie was first to finish but as
he suspected was OCS, leaving Griffiths to take the gun. Henman kept the
boat upright more often then MacDonald to come in second and Yates
battled round for fourth.
