The RS300 Fat Face Circuit at QMSC had something for everyone. On
Saturday light airs and big shifts gave the lightweights and A-Rigs their
moment, while on Sunday a gradual build to a solid, if not steady, F3-4
favoured the heavier sailor. There seemed to be more snakes than ladders
throughout, but consistency paid, and it was John Carron who found his
way to the front with remarkable regularity to win by 9 points, and never
less than second.
On Saturday, Carron, Cris Gardner, a new face on the circuit, and
Peter Curtis, with his A-rig, enjoyed the lighter airs, and dominated the
front of the fleet. Barry Do you want to see my bus-pass? Steel,
jumped to the front to take race two, leading from the start line. Greg
Barton managed a second place, in race three, showing excellent
boatspeed. After 3 races John Carron had a clear lead from Cris Gardner,
but the remainder of the fleet were tightly packed behind.
Not a breath disturbed the reservoir on Sunday morning but a
patient race officer postponed until a decent breeze was filled in. Matt
Sargent won the first race, fighting hard to hold off the lightweights
downwind, but was a distant fourth in race 2, won, in an increasing
breeze, by Cliff Shaw. 300s were now at their best, slicing through the
water upwind and down. Fittingly John Carron won the last race, with
Cris Gardner fourth and therefore retaining second overall.
Tight, tactical racing across the whole fleet in tricky
conditions opened the 2005 Fat Face Circuit in fine style and bodes well
for a great season ahead.
